On horseback & on foot · the old line

A castle on its rock, a horse beneath you, and a railway the trains left behind. Four days between Karytaina and Chranoi — sleeping the whole time in one village, so the days unfold from a single doorway.

  • 4 days
  • On horseback & on foot
  • Karytaina · Leontari · Paradisia · Chranoi
  • Slow, fair, real

The idea

Two ways of moving that the car made obsolete: the horse and the train. This journey puts you back on both. You ride out from beneath the old bridge at Karytaina with the Frankish castle on its rock above you — then spend two days on the abandoned Corinth–Kalamata line, a metre-gauge railway that carried the Peloponnese for a century and has stood silent since 2011. Stations where nothing arrives, stone bridges that carry nothing across, and a lake nobody is hurrying to reach.

Your base is Leontari for all four nights. No packing and repacking, no transfers at dawn — just one village that gets familiar, and a different direction each morning.

The rhythm

  • Day 1 · Arrive in LeontariSettle into the village that will be your base for the whole journey. An evening walk through the lanes, the old churches, and a first Arcadian table with your hosts.
  • Day 2 · Karytaina, on horsebackDown to the old bridge at Karytaina to meet Stefi’s Equestrian Tours and your horse for the day. Out along the Alpheios beneath the castle rock — and back as the light turns and the castle hill goes gold.
  • Day 3 · Paradisia & the lake at MavrolimnaA walk from Paradisia up past Agia Triada to Mavrolimna, then back down to the old station — the platform still there, the timetable long gone. The afternoon is deliberately empty.
  • Day 4 · Chranoi & the two bridgesThe finest stretch of the silent line. Chranoi sits at 500 metres in the natural gate between Arcadia and Messenia, and two great stone bridges still stride across the ravines below it. A long lunch, then home.

This is a rhythm, not a timetable. We match the riding, the walking and the empty afternoons to you and to the season.
