Cliff-hung monasteries, a church roofed by seventeen trees, and a gorge they call the Mount Athos of the Peloponnese. For more than a thousand years the Lousios has been a place of prayer — and it is still alive: working monasteries where monks welcome walkers with loukoumi and cold water, reached on foot along the same paths pilgrims have always used. Go slow, go quiet.

Prodromou Monastery
Built into the cliff face above the Lousios — wooden balconies hanging over the void. The Menalon Trail passes its gate.
Philosophou Monastery
The oldest monastery of the gorge (963 AD). Its «hidden school» kept Greek letters alive through the Ottoman centuries.
Aimyalon Monastery
Carved into golden rock minutes from Dimitsana and the Water Power Museum — a quiet stop between village and gorge.

Kernitsa Monastery
A living convent in the woods towards Vytina, home of Panagia Kernitsiotissa — a pilgrimage the mountains keep for themselves.

Agia Theodora, Vasta
A tiny Byzantine chapel with seventeen tall trees growing from its roof and a spring beneath it. No one can quite explain how it stands.
