An Authentic Hiking Experience
The Art of Hiking in Arcadia
Arcadia is a land you read with your feet. Long before roads, its people crossed these mountains on stone-paved kalderimia, linking village to village, monastery to spring, summer pasture to winter fold.
Here, a trail is never just a line on a map. The morning mist that embraces the peaks of Mount Mainalo lifts to reveal fir forests, deep gorges and the sound of running water. The Menalon Trail—the first Greek path awarded “Leading Quality Trail” status by the European Ramblers Association—is not a race to a summit but an invitation to walk slowly and look closely.
And this—a whole day measured only in footsteps—is the true luxury you cannot buy anywhere else in the world.

1. The Menalon Trail
A 75-kilometre certified route linking eight historic villages across Mount Mainalo, from Stemnitsa and Dimitsana down into the Lousios Gorge. The path threads past cliff-hanging monasteries, watermills and cold springs, with the river always somewhere below you. Greece’s first “Leading Quality Trail” is walked in stages, not conquered in a day. Each village offers a bed, a meal and a reason to stay one more night.
2. The Lousios Gorge
The river that, legend says, bathed the newborn Zeus carved a green ravine of sheer rock, watermills and monasteries seemingly glued to the cliffs. You cross wooden footbridges and old kalderimia between the monasteries of Prodromou and Philosophou, beside the coldest, clearest water Pausanias ever described. It is a short walk with a long memory—three thousand years of myth, faith and craft in a single afternoon on foot.
3. Historical Mule Tracks
Stone-paved kalderimia once connected every Arcadian village to its neighbours; today they set the pace for the slowest, most honest way to travel. You walk the same worn steps as the shepherds and traders before you, through oak woods, terraced fields and forgotten thresholds. These are not sights to tick off but a living network of paths—an internal dialogue with pristine nature that rejuvenates the spirit.
